Hi All
Great posts. I myself would love a TON more information, but I'm at the mercy of the publisher who own and pay for the book to be printed, and do the sales. I do not get royalties as someone once suggested in the past. I earn from the sales of books that I sell only, not anyone elses. They give me a lot of leaway in what I put in it, for helping them, but their intention is to publish value guides, not to be an encyclopedia, while keeping them cost effective.
I have a wonderful database that I record a ton of information on...besides the obvious dates, also hang tags, tush tags, origins (Korea/China/Indo), pellets (PVC, PE, PE plastic), even number of days something's been current, and a friend Marlene helps me keep it current, and Karen (beanielogic) helped with the origins, etc.
Each edition I wanted to add more of such information, but each edition Ty has released sooooo many more beanies that they have more than doubled in size each time, and the cost of printing, especially in color, is so outrageous that we may never see another book. Sad
I personally am more comfortable just working on Beanie Babies, and things I collect. It is strange to think to get a book printed I have to work on a 'value guide', when I am the one least interested in values! Confused However, to make book sales, that's what people are looking for, so that is what Bangzoom published. Many people go to Ty Talk just to ask what the value is...I am glad there are collectors interested in the actual details of the beanies, rather than just the value. It is not allowed to put it at less than retail price, and there are distinct rules to follow for value guides for them to be useful to collectors. Karen (the other one! lol) worked long and hard on determining the beanie values. I couldn't do it. I buy to have them in my collection, not for selling.
Bangzoom were asked by a lot of collectors to have other products in the book, and they probably thought that more books would sell with more products in it. You try to cater to everyone. Amazingly I had a lot of people ask me in the past for Pillow Pals to be added. I think partly because only about 6 are on Ty's site and to find them you have to go various places...in with Baby Ty, etc. Attics were very hard to do without help from established recorders of information, but thank goodness for Becky Estenssoro and her amazing past magzines and newsletters, and more importantly her willingness to share that information, and also collectors who rummaged through their collections with lists I had of what photos I needed, and kept updating those lists as photos were sent. Classics of course are a huge category and one that was needing to be covered, because of all products, they are often found without hang tags and people are wondering what they have.
Anyway, we were going to do 2 books, one for beanies and one for other collections, then I thought great, we could include more info, but retailers said they would just buy the book with beanies in it, so then you would have an issue with how many to print of one book, and how many of the other, and obviously printing costs are reduced by volume. So, I went from having over 500 pages worked out for 2 books, down to the maximum you can do in 1 book of this type, 480. Pricing had been established for 340 pages, but when I came on board I found over 800 products missing, so they added over 100 pages for me, but kept the price the same for collectors.
Besides all this...did I mention I was given 2 - TWO - weeks to get all information and photographs to them!! No sleep for me, or those who helped me! Literally Evil or Very Mad And a whopping 2 days to proof it, and 2 hours of someone's time to correct any mistakes or photos put in the wrong box. July 16th to July 31st. Would have been nice to have had the luxury of more time, but that wasn't to be, when I came on board they were already 2 months past the date it was to have been completed, and all that was in it was my second edition work, my update pages information and photos from Ty's site with a name and no facts, and the 800 missing products. Thank goodness I kept organized records, and thank goodness that myself and a few others had been combining information over on Stashmatic.com site. That is a site you could add more information to, those who want it. I keep adding as time permits, but have so many other things in the works too.
I would love a book like Beanie Mania II. However, there were about 100 products at that time, and now over 4,000, even with just beanies you would be over 2,000 now. That would be one huge book (s)!! I know it was expensive to print the Beanie Mania II, imagine the cost of 20 times that! I couldn't afford to pay to have a book (s) like that printed.
I am a big enthusiast for books and would love to see more of information in print, but the reality is, people don't want to pay what it would take to cover the costs. I paid out over $3,000 for a new computer, publishing program, classes to do my updates professionally, and include them with the book for $21.95, the retail price, but many opt for Amazon and the lower price. It is hard to cover costs if you have to sell at just above what you pay.
There are so many things I'd love to do. I'd like my Variation Lists printed, with photos, sports commorative lists and photos. I'd love BeanieLogic to do a counterfeit booklet. There's no end to the ideas. I'd love detailed beanie books by categories...New Face bears, Dogs, etc. However, the minimum to get printed is 500, and I haven't even sold that many books yet. I will be doing update lists through January 2008, and will see how I do with those, if I can cover my costs. You have to consider unsold ones as well, time doesn't even factor in it! lol
Love: Karen
